Why area factors are squares, not lengths

Area units are squares of length units, so factors square too: 1 ft² = 0.3048² = 0.09290304 m² exactly, 1 yd² = 0.9144² = 0.83612736 m², 1 acre = 43,560 ft² = 4046.8564224 m², 1 hectare = 10,000 m². The converter anchors everything to the square metre.

Two anchors are worth memorising: a hectare is a 100 m × 100 m square (2.47 acres), and an acre is about 75% of a football pitch. The acre survives in US/UK real estate precisely because it's 'a field you can picture', not because it's metric-clean.Irregular shapes need subdivision before any converter helps: split an L-shaped plot into rectangles, convert each, and sum — the factors are linear so parts sum correctly. Roofing and flooring trades work this way constantly, which is why the converter anchors everything to the square metre: the unit every construction bill of quantities eventually reduces to.

The conversion, unit by unit

target = value × (factor_from ÷ factor_to) with m² as base: ft² 0.09290304, yd² 0.83612736, ac 4046.8564224, ha 10000.

The trap that catches almost everyone

  • Squaring linear conversions by hand and forgetting to square the factor (1 ft = 0.3048 m, but 1 ft² = 0.0929 m², not 0.3048 m²).
  • Confusing hectares with acres — 1 ha = 2.471 acres, a 2.5× gap that breaks land-price comparisons.
  • Treating the US survey acre as different — for normal plots it matches the international acre within rounding.
  • Comparing price per square foot across countries quoting price per square metre without conversion.Converting linear fencing length with an area factor — a 1-hectare square plot has a 400 m perimeter, not 100 m; perimeter and area are different dimensions.

An apartment, a garden and a farm

A 90 m² apartment: 90 ÷ 0.09290304 = 968.8 ft². A 0.5-acre garden: 2023.4 m² ≈ 0.2 hectares. A 10-hectare farm is 100,000 m² = 24.71 acres.

Area conversion questions

How many square feet in a square metre?

10.7639 ft² (since 1 ft² = 0.09290304 m² exactly).

What's bigger, an acre or a hectare?

Hectare — 10,000 m² vs 4046.86 m². One hectare ≈ 2.47 acres.

How big is an acre visually?

About 75% of a football pitch, or a 63.6 m × 63.6 m square.

Why is an acre 43,560 square feet?

Historical chain-of-rods surveying definitions; the modern definition pins it via the foot.

Can I convert floor area to building materials?

Indirectly — divide area by unit coverage (tiles per box, paint per litre coverage) once units match.

What is 1 hectare in acres?

10000 ÷ 4046.8564224 = 2.471 ac.

How many m² is my 12 ft × 15 ft room?

180 ft² × 0.09290304 = 16.72 m² — convert the area, not each wall.
